The Four C’s
Pollutants found in storm water runoff
include: suspended sediments, nutrients (such as phosphorus and
nitrogen), pesticides, trace metals, chlorides, organics, grease and
microorganisms (such as bacteria, viruses and protozoan’s). The highest
concentrations of pollutants are typically found during the initial
period of a storm, referred to as the first flush phenomenon. Detention
ponds and constructed wetlands are often designed to ensure sufficient
detention time and pollutant removal of runoff.
The Lucas Solution AKART © controls the four C’s:
- Collection– Capture and storage of runoff for more timely release is an important component to The Lucas Solution AKART ©.
- Control – Proper containment measures, spill prevention and cleanup, waste reduction, reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides, illicit connections, public education, The Lucas Solution AKART ©.
- Cleaning– accomplished through techniques that promote filration and The Lucas Solution AKART ©.
- Conveyance– Conveyance systems are used to drain and direct the flow of runoff generated. With The Lucas Solution AKART © this is done with catch basins feeding into storm drains.
If your property of business drains to the city storm water system, rivers or streams which are considered State waters, then you are responsible for:
- Maintaining your drainage structure, including conveyance systems, detention systems and treatment systems.
- Maintaining streets, driveways, parking lots and sidewalks.
- Identifying and eliminating illegal connections to the drain control system.
Blue Marble Storm and Lawn Inc. Inspects businesses and works with them to prevent pollutants from entering private and public storm drains. It’s important to keep pollutants out of storm water because these systems eventually discharge untreated water to nearby streams, lakes, and our US waters effecting and damaging precious natural resources.
Business inspections are part of The Lucas Solution AKART©, storm water management practice and storm water pollution prevention program, a requirement of the Washington State Department of Ecology administration through the City’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for municipal storm water discharge.
Maintenance Inspections
If you own a storm water detention, treatment and conveyance system, you need to maintain your system and inspect it regularly to prevent flooding, avoid property damage, and protect surface water quality. Blue Marble Storm and Lawn Inc. has created a new form of detention pond an operational BMP “Sea Life Saver Pure System”.
The Lucas Solution AKART© can help you meet and exceed your maintenance inspections.
